How to Change IP Address Netgear Router

The Netgear Router we will use for this example is the Netgear WNR1000 router so EXACT images and screenshots may vary slightly but the different Netgear Routers should be similar enough that you can change the IP address via this tutorial.

❶ Log in to your Netgear WNR1000 Router by typing the following in your web browser address bar:

  • 192.168.1.1.
  • 192.168.0.1

If neither of these work for your Netgear router then see the tutorial on how to find your routers ip address.

❷ A prompt box will appear asking for the username and password. Enter it. If you have not specifically set a username for your Netgear WNR1000 Router then the default username and password for Netgear routers should be used.

❸ Once logged in you will see the following screen. This is the configuration and setup utility for your Netgear wnr1000 router.

❹ Click Basic Settings on the left side of the page. Scroll to the bottom of the page to the section Router Mac Address. This is what we change to change the IP address in the Netgear wnr1000 router.

❺ Note that the current MAC address is a series of a combination of numbers and letters separated by colons like this - XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX. Copy/save the current Mac address down as backup.

❻ Check/get your current IP address before making any changes. You should see your current IP address at the top of this page or go to What is my IP.

❼ Change just ONE of the LAST 4 letters/numbers of the MAC address to either a number from 0 - 9 or a letter from A - F.

❽ Click the Apply button. The Netgear wnr1000 router will take about 15 seconds to update and apply the new MAC address settings. During the 15 second update period there will be no internet access as the new IP address is obtained/updated.

❾ Once the update is complete, to view your new IP address. The refresh of the page may take up to 30 seconds to complete.

NOTE: this method of changing your IP address is not effective if you wish to appear to be coming from another country or region as the current ISP you are getting internet access from remains the same. This method of changing your IP address also does not hide your identity online. If you wish to change your IP address to appear to be from a different location, a proxy server must be used.
